1939, Movie, NR, 88 mins

The second of four versions of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, this is the best to date. The story is the same, but director Richard Thorpe, producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and screenwriter Hugo Butler managed to put more fun into this remake than all the others combined. With Mickey Rooney as the irrepressible Huck, the fast-moving story grabs the audience from the start and never ceases to amuse. Huck resists the efforts of Widow Douglass (Elisabeth Risdon) and Miss Watson (Clara Blandick) to "civilize" him and flees to the Mississippi, where he hooks up with escaped slave Jim (Rex Ingram). The two float down the river on a raft, discovering much about the country and each other. Although the studio kept the budget to a minimum, the film is a great success due to Thorpe's imaginative direction and the excellent cast. Rooney and Ingram are especially memorable. leave a comment
