Stamp plays an aging actor named (conveniently) Terence Stamp who takes part in an experiment to travel through time. The project, organized by ex-lover Moreau, allows him to venture into the past where he witnesses the death of his wife. He then is sent into the future. He discovers a way to manipulate his time travels without Moreau's assistance, and he reunites himself with his wife in the past, where they face death together.
