The plight of the Australian marsupial lycanthrope (a cross between a werewolf and a koala) is given a comic treatment in this the second Philippe Mora sequel to Joe Dante's THE HOWLING (1981). Mora's last sequel, 1985's THE HOWLING II . . . YOUR SISTER IS A WEREWOLF, boasted the presence of Christopher Lee and Sybil Danning. No such luck with THE HOWLING III. Although it has a relatively unknown cast and is inept technically, THE HOWLING III makes up for its deficiencies with its intentional silliness. A scientist (Barry Otto) whose raison d'etre is the study of a tribe of Australian marsupial werewolves (differentiated from their European cousins by their pouches) and his sidekick (Ralph Cotterill) make contact with the tribe's leader (Max Fairchild), whose ballerina wife (Dasha Blahova) unexpectedly transforms into a werewolf (the Russian pouchless variety) while in mid-pirouette on the Sydney Opera House stage. Some dissent within the tribe causes the pouched Jerboa (Imogen Annesley) to pack her things and head for the big city, where she finds work as an extra on a horror film called "Shape Shifters, Part 8." It's all good, not-so-clean fun with a tongue-in-cheek (or "tongue-in-pouch," as Mora put it) sense of humor. leave a comment
