In this very complex and sometimes confusing mystery, Peppard plays a boxer-turned-writer drifting in France. He stumbles upon a neofascist group (led by Michell, Welles, and Michael) that is attempting to overthrow France, annex Algeria, and take over Europe. Peppard takes a job in a Paris household as a tutor to Shaw, the 8-year-old son of lovely widow Stevens, whose husband was a general killed in the Algerian war. She believes that Shaw is the object of a kidnaping plot. When Peppard discovers that the neofacists do intend to kidnap Shaw, the conspirators frame the writer for murder.
