Written and perhaps partially directed by producer Alfred Leone, THE HOUSE OF EXORCISM is a real mess, part Mario Bava film and part EXORCIST rip-off, with both parts spliced together in a seemingly haphazard fashion to form a frustratingly disjointed whole. Lisa (Elke Sommer) is an innocent who spies a wax dummy and recognizes her own image. She then spots the Devil--Telly Savalas--and flees. She winds up in a strange mansion inhabited by a depraved family whose members engage in sadism, nymphomania, incest, and necrophilia. To make matter worse, the butler (again Savalas, this time sucking on a lollipop, a la "Kojack") looks just like the previously seen Devil! Lisa is possessed by the Devil and is taken to a hospital, where she is tied to the bed and where she does things like vomit up frogs and levitate until a priest (Robert Alda) comes in to perform an exorcism. Apparently, the first two-thirds of the film are Bava's (filmed in 1972) and the last part--the exorcism, starring Alda--was inserted later by producer Leone for the American release. The Bava scenes, naturally, have some real haunting power, while the exorcism is merely silly. leave a comment
