1988, Movie, PG, 101 mins

In 1951 Life magazine employee McGillis comes under attack from commie-hating senator Salwen for her left-leaning ideals. She is fired and, desperate for income, takes as a job a reader to a wealthy matron (Tandy). Soon she is intrigued by strange happenings in the house across the street from her employer's home. Aided by FBI agent Daniels, she begins to investigate and is drawn into a web of international intrigue. This is a finely crafted work by director Hyams, who doesn't clutter his plots with the gimmicks and action that plague most modern-day thrillers. It all has a nice Alfred Hitchcock style to it, with ordinary people placed in dangerous circumstances. The performers are all fine, although they are somewhat hindered by the fact that little is done to develop their characters. leave a comment
