Parents of America: Beware! Should you choose to sit through this insufferable bit of high-concept fluff, you will feel as though you have been unlawfully detained for nearly two hours. This escapist fantasy aimed at children of broken marriages involves a group of small-town kids who imprison their parents in a basement, figuring that forced confinement in close quarters will drive all thoughts of divorce from their addled brains. Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Pollak are the bickering mom and dad whose kids cook up the screwy scheme. They, like the rest of the movie's supposed grown-ups, spend their time hatching lamebrained plans to escape while their bratty offspring -- led by precocious newcomer Kyle Howard and Jennifer Love Hewitt, star of TV's Party of Five -- rule the roost upstairs. The movie's trivial approach to marital difficulties isn't even its biggest offense: That honor goes to its cynical, all-out assaults on the audience's heartstrings. Should we find ourselves in the mood for a comedy of divorce, we'll take the forthrightly vicious WAR OF THE ROSES any day. leave a comment
