One of the first — and best — of the semi-documentary suspense thrillers that helped define the American film-noir style. Influenced by the development of neorealism in Italy, director Henry Hathaway used non-professional actors, shot on actual locations whenever possible and incorporated newsreel footage to tell this tense tale of a German-American student (William Eythe) who infiltrates a gang of Nazi spies in WWII-era New York City.
