This slow and often tedious film takes place in England during the early part of WW II. The story concerns Tone, a wealthy young man with a strong aversion to killing, who becomes a conscientious objector. Lake is a governess in his mansion and also a German spy. At the outbreak of the war, she marries Tone for protection. Because of his beliefs, he is deferred for farmwork, while Lake does her work for the enemy.
