This well-made thriller set in 1890s London stars Lawford as a jewel thief who, along with accomplices Dwyer and Gordon, steals a valuable emerald at a ritzy party. At the same time, though totally unrelated to the theft, a bobby is murdered by a police killer called "the Terror," played by Shaw. The murder complicates the escape of Lawford and company and causes them to come under suspicion of Scotland Yard superintendent, Culver, for both the theft and the killing. Lawford uses his quick wits to keep one step ahead of the law, biding his time until the heat is off and he can dispose of the emerald.
