A GRAND HOTEL-inspired drama that was slapped together and released just before the more famous (and vastly superior) adaptation of Vicki Baum's play hit the screen. The main storyline circles around von Eltz as an ex-con jewel thief who arrives at a famed New York City hotel soon before it is to be torn down so that he can uncover the fortune in gems he had stashed in a fireplace years before. Unfortunately, the room in which he stashed the jewels is occupied, forcing him to stay in a room adjoining it. The majority of the film details von Eltz's attempts to retrieve his stash, until he is finally caught red-handed by the cops, who, inexplicably, have been waiting all these years for him to make the attempt. leave a comment
