The setting is Berlin 1945, and the Allies are rapidly closing in on what is left of the Third Reich. The once luxurious Hotel Berlin now houses a small group of scared Germans who wait in hiding for the inevitable. Among them: Lorre, a Noble Prize winning scientist who has been virtually destroyed by the Nazis; Dantine, a former student of Lorre's who has escaped from Dachau and taken refuge in the hotel disguised as a waiter; Emerson, the hotel's treacherous hostess who continues her devotion to the Reich; and King, a beautiful actress. King recognizes Dantine from wanted posters that have been put up all over Berlin and strikes a deal with the refugee: if Dantine will help her escape Germany before the Allies arrive, she will remain silent regarding his identity. Unfortunately, Emerson suspects the couple of treason and reports them to an SS captain played by Coulouris. In a violent confrontation, Dantine kills Coulouris by knocking him down the hotel's elevator shaft. Meanwhile, the panic-stricken King double-crosses Dantine and sides with the Gestapo to save her skin. She agrees to tell the Nazis the whereabouts of the secret underground and goes off to set Dantine up while Lorre and the other residents of the hotel decide to join the anti-Nazi forces and take a stand. Dantine discovers King's treachery and, seeing no other alternative, kills her. HOTEL BERLIN was based on a novel by author Baum who also penned the phenomenally successful GRAND HOTEL (an achievement that would haunt her during her lengthy career). The post-production of the film was done in a great rush because the studio feared that Berlin would actually fall before they could get the movie into the theaters, thus destroying any topicality the publicity department could exploit. Editor Richards was given only five days to cut the film, and musical composer Waxman had to work 20 hours a day to complete the score. The hurried result was an entertaining, though sometimes confusing film that may have been better if a bit more time and care had been taken piecing it together. leave a comment
