With the budgets of Hollywood filmmakers rising to preposterous levels (for some equally preposterous films) in the late 1970s, it took a young filmmaker to prove that high-quality material could still be made on a budget of just $33,000. For his debut feature, produced in association with the American Film Institute, director Brest depicts a student overwhelmed by his obsession with death. There's a lot of energy in this black comedy, leading up to a fine ending that interweaves visuals in counterpoint to appropriate music. Brest uses his cast of professionals (most notably Welles, and Villechaize of television's "Fantasy Island") with good skill, combining footage of an old Laurel-and-Hardy film in the piece as well. Brest later became a victim of the Hollywood big-spending syndrome himself, directing the overbudgeted (and overrated) BEVERLY HILLS COP. leave a comment
