Hot Shot: Review

Jimmy Kristidis (Youngs), a brash professional soccer player for the New York Rockers, is removed from the lineup as a result of his hot-dog playing style, then suspended from the team for two months after he gives the coach (Leon Russom) a tongue lashing when his best friend, Vinnie Fortino (Billy Warlock), is left paralyzed by a game injury. Frustrated, Jimmy travels to Brazil, where he meets his hero, Santos, a retired soccer star (played by real-life retired soccer star Pele) and persuades him to help him with his game. Santos' tutelage transforms both Jimmy's play and his personality, and, when the American returns to New York, he's able to help out Vinnie and prove himself on the field. Director Rick King undermines his otherwise engaging premise with cheap sentiment. Unfortunately, the acting isn't much better, so this one will probably be best appreciated by soccer devotees. If it's the great Pele that you want to watch in action, pass up HOT SHOT and go directly to John Huston's VICTORY, a much better film that puts the brilliant Brazilian's talents to much better use. leave a comment
