Shot in the Philippines but set in Latin America, this Jonathan Demme-penned and -produced film depicts the radicalization of four American nurses working for the Peace Corps (Cagan, Markov, Richardson, and Rose). After being kidnaped, the nurses refuse to provide medical assistance for a
band of guerrillas led by Argenziano. Although the women eventually begin to sympathize with the rebels' cause, they finally escape. Then they are captured, tortured, and in one case raped by a sadistic government army officer. Again they escape, but this time they seek out the rebels and join
their struggle.
