HOSTAGE NEGOTIATOR, THE
starstarstarstar
Smarter than a rock but dumber than your average barnyard fowl, this USA Network original movie represents made-for-TV filmmaking at its dopiest. The heroine is blonde and beautiful mother of two Theresa Foley (Gail O’Grady), who's been trained by the FBI to manipulate terrorist types into relinquishing their human bargaining chips. Theresa is married to Frank Foley (Michael Bowen), a loose cannon FBI agent dismissed from three consecutive investigations for his bizarre behavior. Jealous of his successful wife (whom he suspects of infidelity) and angry at the Bureau, Frank plunges into insanity at record speed, going from responsible husband and father to reckless, raving lunatic in roughly the time it takes to heat a can of soup. When Frank is not hiding out in the attic, he’s stealing money from his employer or threatening his wife with a gun. Theresa, who is already being stalked by a vengeful escaped prisoner, must draw on her skills as a hostage negotiator to survive her husband’s loony attacks. The script seems to have been dashed off and the characters are one-dimensional and boring or, in Frank’s case, poorly drawn and completely inexplicable. leave a comment --Scott Jacobson
