A dismal remake of the 1921 silent-film classic starring Rudolph Valentino, this Minnelli-directed picture stars Ford as an Argentine playboy turned WW II resistance hero. Patriarch Cobb, who has built a vast estate in the Argentine Pampas as a refuge against the ravages of war, holds a family reunion during the 1930s. When Cobb discovers that his German-born nephew, Boehm, and Boehm's father, Lukas, have become Nazis, he rages against them, predicting that they will bring down upon the world the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: conquest, pestilence, war, and death. After Cobb's death, his playboy grandson wanders to Paris with his French father, Boyer. Ford plans to live a life of wealth and luxury there but becomes increasingly involved with the Resistance through the influence of Mimieux, his activist sister, and of Thulin (her voice dubbed by Angela Lansbury), the wife of an imprisoned underground leader. This overlong remake is ponderous and disjointed, with none of the roles fully developed. The film most notably lacks a compelling lead--Ford is a fine actor, but he's simply no Valentino, and it appears that both he and Minnelli were aware of that fact. leave a comment
