HORROR HOTEL | CITY OF THE DEAD, THE
starstarstarstar
Written by CIRCUS OF HORROR screenwriter George Baxt, this was the first British production from American Milton Subotsky, who would soon go on to head Amicus. Part CURSE OF THE DEMON, part PSYCHO, HORROR HOTEL is an effective, quite atmospheric witchcraft film set in the US. A young student of the occult, Nan Barlow (Venetia Stevenson), visits a rundown village in Massachusetts on the recommendation of her history professor, Driscoll (Christopher Lee). She discovers that the village inn is run by a witch who was burned at the stake in 1692 but brought back to life by the Devil. Nan now finds herself the main ingredient in a human sacrifice--presided over by none other than Prof. Driscoll. The girl is killed, and shortly thereafter her boy friend (Tom Naylor) and brother come looking for her, eventually taking on the evil coven in an extremely exciting and spectacular finale. Director John Moxey makes much of the fog-shrouded claustrophobic atmosphere, effectively evoking the spirit of H.P. Lovecraft. Lee turns in another finely tuned performance, this time sporting a remarkably good American accent. leave a comment
