This badly scripted Boetticher western is redeemed by Ryan's great performance. Ryan and Hudson are half-brothers who go their separate ways after the Civil War. Hudson decides to settle down and become a rancher, but Ryan, who has grown accustomed to action and violence, launches a campaign to build a personal empire in the West. Ryan murders Burr, another unscrupulous heavy who tries to cross him, and Burr's widow, Adams, falls for Ryan despite the fact that he killed her husband. Eventually the brothers' paths cross and the inevitable showdown occurs. The film is well directed by Boetticher, but Stevens' implausible script (much weaker than the screenplays Burt Kennedy would later pen for the director), and a haphazard performance from a young Hudson sap the film's vitality. leave a comment
