A moody, somewhat arty gangster film with an outstanding cast. Trintignant stars as a Frenchman trying to escape his past. He goes to Canada, where he becomes an unwitting participant in a mob hit. The gangsters take him in and make him one of the group. The aging leader of the gang, Ryan, has planned a big robbery, but the heist goes awry and results in the deaths of most of the gang members.
