And Hope To Die

A moody, somewhat arty gangster film with an outstanding cast. Trintignant stars as a Frenchman trying to escape his past. He goes to Canada, where he becomes an unwitting participant in a mob hit. The gangsters take him in and make him one of the group. The aging leader of the gang, Ryan, has planned a big robbery, but the heist goes awry and results in the deaths of most of the gang members. The film has some interesting editing, including intercuts of the gang planning the robbery with scenes of French children playing games. The counterpoint of the images is disturbing and haunting.
