One of the least offensive Needham-and-Reynolds efforts, but that isn't saying much. This is supposed to be a tribute to the unheralded group of movie-making employees known as stunt men--and it should have been a better film, considering that both director Needham and Reynolds were once stunt men themselves. As is, it's just another mindless exercise in unexciting, unmotivated action sequences punctuated by moments of stupid, redneck, good-ol'-boy humor. Reynolds is an aging king-of-the-stunt-men type whose battle-scarred body is convincing him to retire. Enter young, up-and-coming stuntman Vincent, who challenges the "old man" to perform the most difficult and dangerous stunt in his career for $50,000. The film loses from both angles, with the action scenes lackluster and repetitive and the dramatic scenes maudlin and trite. Needham spent almost $35 million to make this mindless movie, and audiences went to see it in droves, paving the way for the even-worse CANNONBALL RUN movies. The film was nominated for an Academy Award: Best Sound, and it didn't win. leave a comment
