In the middle of the Depression, alcoholic, tubercular, would-be country singer Red Stovall (Clint Eastwood) moves in with his sister's family on their lonely western farm. Red's young nephew, Whit (played by Clint's son, Kyle Eastwood), becomes his dissolute uncle's protector, accompanying him to Nashville for a Grand Ole Opry audition.
