Homicide: The Movie: Review
More effective as a nostalgic reunion film than a self-contained crime movie, this get-together won't disappoint fans of the innovative cop show
Homicide
. Once the head of Baltimore's homicide unit, Al Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) is now running for mayor on a legalized-drugs platform. He's gunned down at a press conference, and surgeons scramble to save his life. Giardello is so highly regarded that several former members of his team offer their detective skills free of charge, and so working officers like Paul Falsone (Jon Seda) and Meldrick Lewis (Clark Johnson) are joined by John Munch (Richard Belzer), now a member of NYC's special victims unit (Belzer went from

); Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher), who's become a professor; and Tim Bayliss (Kyle Secor), who's been on extended leave. Many others pitch in, including the retired Stanley Bollander (Ned Beatty), pathologist Julianna Cox (Michelle Forbes), and even Giardello's policeman son, Mike (Giancarlo Esposito). Ballistics evidence links the assassination attempt to the shooting of a drug-dealer nicknamed Yin-Yang, but the cops must overcome two obstacles: The videotape of Giardello's shooting doesn't reveal any drawn weapon, and the current administration resents the unofficial interference of Giardello's former crew. As toes get stepped on all over Baltimore, the suspect pool narrows down to an Afro-American activist, a white supremacist, and the widow of a man Giardello shot in the line of duty. Shockingly, the shooter bursts into the hospital and opens fire on the surgeons operating on Giardello. As Giardello's life hangs in the balance, his concerned comrades race to find a madman clever enough to conceal his motives and cover his tracks. As an exercise in reweaving multiple characters into the fabric of a reunion film, this made-for-TV movie deserves kudos. Although the mystery is a bit attenuated, it offers dozens of superbly played scenes that recall the glory days of this actor-powered series.
