Fans of director Andrei Konchalovsky, the Soviet visionary turned Hollywood hack, will tell you that HOMER & EDDIE is a lost masterwork, destroyed when its distributor demanded major re-editing. What remains of the film, however, is so uniformly egregious that it's difficult to believe Konchalovsky's cut could have been much better. HOMER & EDDIE gives us a road-movie relationship between two misfits: Homer (James Belushi), an innocent, mentally retarded dishwasher in his mid-30s, and Eddie (Whoopi Goldberg), a recently escaped mental patient who's dying of brain cancer. Starts cute and ends weepy, much as you'd expect. What's unforgivable is a blockheaded religious subtext, suggesting that Konchalovsky thought he was up to something Important. leave a comment
