This unaccomplished farce's satire of the music business is as idiotic as its sentimentalizing of one-hit wonders. Before Eminem, this film claims, there was a Caucasian rap star named MC Squared (Dave McCrae), and back in 1997 this honky rapper jammed into music history with his album "Theory of Sellativity." Patterning himself after another white hip-hop performer, Hoolie Hooligan (David M. Wallace), the reclusive MC Squared hasn't kept up with musical trends. One day he summons a plumber to fix his deluxe sink and, lo and behold, the service man is washed-up Hoolie Hooligan! MC Squared's retinue advises him not to wrest the subdued Hoolie from his new life, and while he ponders the fleeting nature of fame, MC's producer sets up a TV interview with influential Tallulah Jones (Downtown Julie Brown). He blows this opportunity by casually dropping the "N" word in the manner of African-American rappers. As he considers methods of damage control and tries to figure out how to re-establish his career, MC Squared has a bright idea. MC Squared will rescue pioneer Hoolie from oblivion and they'll do a duet! Against everyone's better judgment, MC Squared launches Hoolie's comeback, but finds that he's hitched his star to a disaster. After setting one foot back in the limelight, Hoolie turns from milquetoast to roaring drunk. The foul-mouthed rapper exacerbates tensions with Ms. Jones and distances MC Squared from his loyal crew. Despite MC Squared's faith in him, Hoolie sabotages every effort to restore him to glory. Is MC Squared so out of touch with reality that he's about to become another Hoolie Hooligan? This unbearable experience consistently rings false notes rather than prompting laughs, and features a cast who wouldn't make the first cut at an American Idol audition. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
