Just a showcase (and a poor one) for a number of stars to walk around with little to do. Durante plays a jungle film star whose movies are bombing because of his anemic lions. Pearl, reprising his famous radio role, is the explorer getting more lions for Durante, but rival jungle star Givot wants them for himself. Durante throws a party for Pearl that climaxes with the arrival of the lions' owners, Laurel and Hardy. There is some color footage when live-action is combined with Disney's Mickey Mouse and Big Bad Wolf of THE THREE LITTLE PIGS fame. Eleven songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, including the classic "Blue Moon," were cut before the film's release. Songs remaining were: "Hollywood Party," "Hello," "Reincarnation" (Rodgers, Hart); "I've Had My Moments" (Gus Kahn, Walter Donaldson); "Feeling High" (Donaldson, Howard Dietz); "Hot Chocolate Soldiers" (Arthur Freed, Nacio Herb Brown). British music hall mimic Florence Desmond (born Dawson) had cut a record entitled "Hollywood Party" in 1933 in which she imitated the voices of Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, and Janet Gaynor. When Gaynor heard the popular record she called MGM bosses to suggest Desmond be given a film contract. Desmond was given a two-film contract and was scheduled to appear in MGM's HOLLYWOOD PARTY in 1934 but no room was made for her talents in the script. She appeared in MR. SKITCH (1933) and in I AM SUZANNE (1934), where she imitated Garbo, Dietrich, and others as voices of various puppets. After using up Desmond's special talents in poor programmers, MGM sent her packing back to England. leave a comment
