No Holds Barred

1989, Movie, PG-13, 93 mins

Pro wrestling star Hulk Hogan portrays Rip Thomas, pro wrestling star, in this comic-book-style "drama." Brell (Kurt Fuller), the slimy boss of the World Television Network, wants Rip to wrestle on his station to boost ratings. But Rip is bound by word and contract to fulfill his obligation to a rival network. Still, those visions of ad dollars and ratings points just won't let Brell rest. When the WTN chief visits a filthy, rough local bar where patrons can indulge in drunken brawls in an actual ring set up for the purpose, Brell gets the idea for a hit TV show, "The Battle of the Tough Guys," in which challengers fight the current champ for fame (and lots of money) in an unregulated match. NO HOLDS BARRED is paced well, with broadly drawn good guys and bad guys. Somewhat problematic is the murky status of the wrestling fans in the film. The "goodness" of Hogan's character is so markedly contrasted with the grossness of the wrestling-bar patrons that the film actually appears to be criticizing its star's fans--who are, after all, also the film's audience. Some may find the cartoonish violence excessive; the champion Tough Guy can't be anyone but a good guy, but that doesn't stop him from doling out to his enemies a very painful punishment. leave a comment
