The Hoax: Review

The tale of Clifford Irving -- the writer who conned venerable publishing house McGraw-Hill and Life magazine into believing he'd gained the confidence of notoriously reclusive multimillionaire Howard Hughes — is almost too ridiculous to be true. Yet it is, and more amazing still, Irving came shockingly close to getting away with it. Amazing though the story is, Lasse Halstrom's film would be nothing without Richard Gere's slippery, insinuating — if not precisely likable — performance as Irving.
