Pons is a nightclub singer dreaming of the Met. Her agent, Oakie, hits on the brilliant idea of dressing her as "Ooga-Hunga, the Bird Girl" and sends her chasing opera lover Horton on an African safari. Of course he sees her, and Pons is rewarded with an appearance at the Met. Pons does get to do a few opera numbers. The film lost tons of money and effectively ended Pons' career in the movies. Lasky also left the studio shortly after this bomb's release. Even the normally strong Walsh direction couldn't help it. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound. Songs include: "You're Like a Song," "I Hit a New High," "Let's Give Love Another Chance," "This Never Happened Before" (Harold Adamson, Jimmy McHugh). Operatic excerpts: "Lucia Di Lammermoor" (Gaetano Donizetti), "Mignon," "Je Suis Titania" (Ambrose Thomas), "Le Rossignol Et La Rose" (The Nightingale Song) (Charles Camille Saint-Saens). leave a comment
