Released in 1943 to an American public hungry for anti-Nazi propaganda, this sensational melodrama, which might have been titled "I Was a Teenage Nazi," offers a horrifying portrait of the Hitler Youth. Tim Holt plays Karl Bruner, a rabid young Nazi who loves Anna Muller (Bonita Granville) despite her hatred of the Fuhrer he worships. Because of Anna's nonconformist stance, she is slated for involuntary sterilization and is the object of physical abuse. In time, Karl comes to recognize the evil that has engulfed his people, but, though he and Anna become even greater soul mates as a result, they meet a tragic, brutal end. Based on Gregor Ziemer's Education for Death, HITLER'S CHILDREN is far from an evenhanded depiction of National Socialism's seduction of German young people, but, at the height of the war, the American moviegoers public was less interested in art than Nazi-bashing, and the film was a big hit at the box office. leave a comment
