1944, Movie, NR, 101 mins

starstarstarstar
A fairly accurate recreation of events in the life of Adolf Hitler from the end of WW I to his ascent as Germany's leader in 1934. Watson, who had portrayed the Nazi leader in HITLER--DEAD OR ALIVE (1942), again plays Hitler, beginning in 1918 where he is hospitalized due to shock suffered in WW I. The film then follows him as he founds the National Socialist Party, attracts Himmler, Goering, Hess, Roehm, and Goebbels to his cause, and his imprisonment after the Munich beer hall "putsch." In prison, he writes Mein Kampf and then continues to campaign for power after his release. At the film's end, he has been appointed Reichchancellor and is ruthlessly attempting to consolidate his power and eliminate his enemies. Reportedly, DeSylva wanted to make this film after seeing a Nazi propaganda film's distorted portrait of the life of Hitler. leave a comment
