One of the most enjoyable films of the very successful "Lassie" series, this finds the famous collie suffering from a psychological fear of water. In between tending to the medical needs of the area, her owner, a Scottish doctor (Edmund Gwenn), works with the dog to rid her of her phobia. When he is badly injured in an accident, Lassie overcomes her fears and swims a raging river to bring help to him. Tom Drake plays a young student doctor; Janet Leigh, in one of her early roles, plays his sweetheart; and Donald Crisp plays Gwenn's rich friend. Twenty-five years earlier, Crisp directed a British film based on the same Ian McLaren story. leave a comment
