This lackluster musical is notable only because it provided Frank Sinatra with his first big-screen starring role. Errol is a bankrupt businessman who, faced with ruination, drafts his servants in a scheme to win back some money. Aided by butler Haley, Errol decides to transform scullery maid Morgan into his beautiful daughter and then marry her off to a rich man. The rich kid next door, Sinatra, is considered a likely candidate (though Morgan is secretly in love with Haley); then along comes the aristocratic Borge--who fills the bill even better--and the marriage announcements are sent out. Just as Morgan is about to marry Borge, it is revealed that he's nothing but a confidence man. It doesn't really matter because Haley breaks up the ceremony and announces the discovery of a secret wine cellar in the house that contains valuable wines and a golden harpsichord that is worth a fortune. In the end, everyone breaks into song and celebrates. The score earned an Oscar nomination, as did the song "I Couldn't Sleep a Wink Last Night," (Jimmy McHugh, Harold Adamson). Other songs were "You Belong in a Love Song," "A Most Important Affair," "The Music Stopped," "Today I'm a Debutante," "A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening," "You're on Your Own," "I Saw You First" (McHugh, Adamson), "Disgustingly Rich" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart), "Boccherini's Minuet in Boogie." leave a comment
