High, Wide And Handsome

1937, Movie, NR, 110 mins

A lavish cornball musical horse opera, with Scott drilling for oil in 19th-century Pennsylvania, clashing with heavy Hale, and wooing Dunne, when she isn't doing her Julie Andrews number, warbling to a farm nag. She's the most discordant element at work here; her belting of saloon songs is on a par with Jeanette McDonald in SAN FRANCISCO. It's the rare musical that can appropriate overly prim actresses. Thank god for Dottie Lamour, and the energy the rest of the cast infuse the hokum with. The forgotten gem from the Hammerstein/Kern score is "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." leave a comment
