The High And The Mighty: Review

Decades before Airport and its ilk came this tautly directed airplane disaster thriller from William Wellman, who made excellent use of CinemaScope, a memorable score and a stellar cast. John Wayne stars as a has-been airline pilot who's now flying shotgun under the command of cocky Robert Stack. On board this particular flight are Claire Trevor, Laraine Day, Phil Harris and Jan Sterling. Cool, statuesque flight attendant Doe Avedon succeeds in making everyone comfortable — until all hell breaks loose. Keep an eye peeled for a grown-up Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer.
