Reminiscent of swinging sixties' caper flicks, this action comedy relies on female star power to barrel past logic-impaired screenwriting. It's Shannon's (Minnie Driver) birthday and her main squeeze, avant-garde musician Ray (Darren Boyd), has forgetten all about it because Phe's busy fiddling with eavesdropping equipment for his urban-noise installation symphony. So Shannon, a nurse, tosses him out, then spends the evening celebrating with her actress pal, Frances (Mary McCormack). After returning home smashed, the women overhear a phone conversation between a thief and his girlfriend, transmitted by Ray's bugging device. Danny (Danny Dyer), who's acting as a robbery look-out, mentions a plan to rip off the nearby Gold Max Safety Deposit Center. When the cops dismiss their information, the women go after bigger game. Frances traces Dannu's cell phone number, Frances pretends to be a man and demands a payoff. Because he's afraid of his boss, Mr. Mason (Kevin McNally), Danny decides to eliminate the blackmailers. But at the drop-off, a homeless man intercepts the cash and takes a bullet meant for the women. When Mason's boss, Kerrigan (Michael Gambon), gets wind of the extortion scheme, he pressures Mason to take care of these pests. Unfortunately, Shannon — who almost got caught snooping around Danny's apartment — is hiding under the bed when Mason executes Danny. Now Shannon and Frances really want to fix Mason's wagon. They lure Mason out to the country, but Mason deduces Shannon's identity while he's riding out on the train and decides he's not about to pay these two broads a penny. Can two rank amateurs outwit this woman-hating career criminal? This insouciant, ladies'-night action film lacks the resonance of THELMA AND LOUISE or BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, but it's hard not to root for the film's somewhat ditzy feminists to stick it to the chauvinist, even when they behave recklessly. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
