In the middle of the Swiss mountains sits the White Cradle Inn, an old and stately manor owned by Carroll's family for many generations. While her husband, Rennie, carries on with one of the inn's maids, Carroll helps the local townspeople by letting some orphans stay in the manor. She
becomes attached to McKeag, one of the younger children. Carroll wants to adopt him but the philandering Rennie says no unless she signs the rights of the inn over to him. Because of her love for the boy, she gives in. Later, when the boy and Rennie go mountain climbing, the latter gives his life
so McKeag won't die when they are caught in a storm. The chances for a strong drama here...
