Hobson and her husband Donald, a disabled playwright, take in two victims of a car crash. It turns out that the pair are convicts on the run and they take their benefactors hostage. A third man (Keel) joins them, bringing with him two child hostages. Donald begins to play psychological games
which force the crooks to spare one of the children who was marked to be killed. This sickly youngster is released and Donald is finally able to kill the captors. The tension is sustained throughout, with some interesting plot twists along the way.
