With Shirley Temple grown up, the singing-and-dancing orphan movie appeared to be a genre left only to filmgoers' memories and the late-late show. Unfortunately, someone decided to revive the concept, which results in the mess presented here. Bleeth is a precocious 12-year-old determined to make it big in show business. She crashes professional drama schools, invades television studios, and, in general, lies, cheats, and steals in her efforts to get to the top. Eventually she's taken in by Hackett, a former entertainer whose career plummeted as his alcohol intake rose. He shows her the ropes of the business which proceeds to the stock happy ending. In between the wafer-thin plot segments are a series of predictable and wholly unrealistic scenes that unashamedly cross the saccharine line. Nothing is a surprise, including the puffed-up musical numbers. The only realistic thing in the film is Bleeth. Though not even a teenager, she comes on like a herd of thundering horses, giving everything she can to her role. Her energy grows on the viewer, causing one to ponder just how far from the truth this film really is. leave a comment
