Vaughn is Bob Ford, the man who killed Jesse James. Along with McNally, Vaughn wants to leave the James gang after the film's opening holdup. McNally wants to give up being an outlaw to marry Vaughn's sister, Castle. Since both are still wanted by the law, Castle makes a deal with the governor, who will pardon both of them if Jesse is brought in dead or alive.
