Equal parts hard-boiled cop movie, disaster picture and alien invasion chiller, this weird sci-fi/adventure tries to be all things to all genre junkies. Detective Billy Sabbath (Boyd Kestner) shoots his partner, George Bernard (J.D. Evermore), to death in self-defense, and is subsequently convicted and sentenced to death. After his execution, he wakes up at the headquarters of Global Air Freight, where team leader Kirk Bluhdorn (Tim Matheson) explains that the company is a front for the government's secret strike force against encroaching extra-terrestrials called the Nephilim. The reanimated Sabbath is skeptical of this Roswell-ish mumbo jumbo, but learns that his late partner had been taken over by an Alien intelligence. The Nephilim visited Earth eons ago and then bided their time; now they want to evict out the Earthlings they regard as squatters on their rightful territory. Not only do the Nephilim turn their victims into zombies, but they're running a stud farm where they mate with Earth women. Sabbath helps torch a Nephilim incubator facility then decamps, incurring the wrath of Bluhdorn. Though Sabbath believes that Bernard was possessed by the Nephilim, he dismisses evidence that his own wife, Julia (Amanda Welles), is the alien-ized girlfriend of the Nephilim's chief commander, Darius (Jesse Borrego) until Julia gives birth to a second-generation Nephilim. Meanwhile, the spacemen kick off their human-extermination campaign by unleashing killer bees in the small town of Eastbrook. Can Sabbath regroup and defeat the invaders, especially with Julia's child — already grown to maturity — on a mission to kill his human "daddy?" Actor-turned-director Matheson shouldn't give up his day job; even allowing for the screenplay's preposterousness, he doesn't have the chops to make the material at all exciting. And he doesn't show much flair for directing actors, either — the cast remains almost comically subdued throughout, despite the plot's reliance on killer bees and Robo-copouts. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
