Hell High: Review
This teen horror offering has the standard ingredients of murder, mayhem, terrified females, rape threats, and nudity (female, of course), but is a cut above the average genre dreck in that it creates relatively plausible motivation for its psycho killer, and features a hero who gets involved in the killings but is torn apart by remorse. Eighteen years after witnessing the murder of two teenagers, the still psychologically scared Brooke Storm (Maureen Mooney), a high-school biology teacher, becomes the victim of a vicious prank masterminded by one her students (Christopher Stryker). When the prank degenerates into a rape attempt, Brooke falls through a window, and is apparently killed. But she comes back, loaded for bear. The performances range from adequate to good, with Stryker serving up a rewardingly rotten brat, and Mooney handling the shift from terrorized female to marauding killer with persuasive flair. Steven Fierberg's photography is craftsmanlike, the pacing and editing move smoothly, and the score does a nice job of hyping the action. The terror level is not going to make cinematic history, however, and gorehounds will find more grisly effects elsewhere.
