A rousing submarine drama, Huston is the whole show in HELL BELOW, playing the part of a rugged, disciplined sub captain during WW I. After performing a dangerous secret mission, the submarine is caught by pursuing German destroyers and submerges to escape, leaving Young to be wounded while drifting on the open sea in a lifeboat. Montgomery, who is Young's bosom buddy, disobeys Huston's orders to play it safe and fires a spread of four torpedoes into the destroyers, exploding two of them. The other two destroyers attack the sub, dropping depth charges which explode next to the ship, causing severe leaks and releasing deadly chlorine gas which causes eight of the crew members to die before Huston's eyes. He keeps his nerve and manages to maneuver his vessel to safety, but he has such a bad time with Montgomery that he orders him locked up for insubordination. Montgomery, who has acted out of compassion to save Young's life, preserving him for Evans, the girl he and Young both love, is later cashiered out of the service. His sacrifice is the thrust of a very weak plot. Huston, however, manages to surface this somewhat soggy craft with his energetic acting ability. Conway's direction, particularly in the action scenes when the submarine is under attack, is exceptional. leave a comment
