This German production of the classic Spyri novel is updated yet still retains the warmth and enjoyment of the book. Schweizer's screenplay and Jacobs' direction make this a film that can be enjoyed by children and adults. Singhammer is the orphaned German girl living with her
grandfather and abducted by her aunt to work as a servant for a rich family. Knuth searches for and is finally reunited with his granddaughter. The photography of the Alpine settings is a standout thanks to Angst, who is among a trio of German cameramen noted for their "mountain" films.
