A lonely fat man (Pruitt Taylor Vince) lives with his overbearing mother (Shelley Winters) and makes pizzas at a shabby roadside diner, cherishing a nubile waitress (Liv Tyler) from afar. This examination of unexamined lives is beautifully acted by all involved, notably former pop diva Deborah Harry, whose nuanced portrayal of a middle-aged tart is almost painful to watch. Replete with modest dreams, stifled longings and meaningful sidelong glances, HEAVY is subtle and carefully wrought, the sort of small film that always wins praise in a season of huge, noisy spectacles.
