John Smallwood (Peter Sellers) is a prison chaplain who is appointed in error as the pastor of a wealthy church in an English industrial city. The man who was to have been given this plum parish (Ian Carmichael) is a fawning toady who would be quite content to mirror the desires of the rich parishioners.
