Mitchum is a Marine and Kerr a Roman Catholic nun who has yet to take her final vows. The two are trapped on a South Pacific island controlled by Japanese troops. Hiding in a cave by day, they forage for food by night, and Mitchum, though respectful, attempts to get Kerr to tell him her background. Slowly their lives are revealed to each other while they are constantly endangered by the enemy. Mitchum then conducts a major night raid on the Japanese food supplies and is almost caught. He returns with a storehouse of goods, plus a bottle of sake, and proceeds to get drunk. In his cups, the Marine blubbers his affection for Kerr but she sidesteps his awkward advances. After running from him through a rain-soaked jungle, she becomes ill, and he nurses her back to health. When more Japanese troops arrive, Mitchum kills one of the enemy and makes away with much-needed blankets. He and Kerr are almost discovered in their cave before US troops invade the island and once more Mitchum goes out, this time to blow up some heavy enemy artillery pieces to prevent them from firing upon American ships. He is seriously wounded in the process but survives. He and Kerr say farewell at the end, Mitchum having more than respect for her and she feeling deeply about him but intending to take her final vows. Although this is an absorbing film, fraught with danger and suspense, director Huston doesn't develop his characters well enough. Mitchum is good as the uneducated but sensitive Marine with a heart, and Kerr is human beneath the habit, but that's it. Visually, the production is top notch. Filmed in Tobago, British West Indies. Mahin and Huston were nominated for their script and Kerr received a Best Actress nomination (she lost to Joanne Woodward for THE THREE FACES OF EVE). leave a comment
