Ford is a New York department-store clerk who buys land in Arizona. He hitchhikes out West and on the way he picks up Conte, a young runaway; Walburn, a college professor who has opted for a hobo life; and Rogers, an illegal alien. Rogers has left Spain after that nation's civil war, worked a transatlantic crossing, and jumped ship in New York.
