An homage to the B westerns of the 1930s and 1940s that stars Bridges as an aspiring young pulp writer in the fashion of Zane Grey. He heads for Hollywood, first making a stop in Nevada where he discovers that his correspondence school is a crooked operation. He accidentally takes the
swindled cash and retreats to the desert; he's then "rescued" by a film crew led by Arkin and joins the bunch as they head back to the studio, falling in love with Arkin's secretary, Danner, and becoming pals with elder stuntman Griffith. The crooks pursue but are stopped when Griffith,
convincingly dressed as an oater star, outwits them with a prop gun.
