A weak love story set in Russia which centers on Costello, a fisherman's daughter. After her true love, Withers, refuses to marry her, she weds a baron, Kirkwood. Years later the two men meet, exiled to Siberia. When Withers is given a chance to return home he switches places with the other man, so that he may be reunited with Costello. However, she has journeyed to Siberia where the passion of older flames is rekindled. To prove himself a martyr, the baron commits suicide, thereby sealing the original lovers' future together. At this point director Michael Curtiz lost sight of his aims and filmed two different endings. Depending on which audience you were in you either saw them live happily ever after in freedom, or not so happily in captivity. Either way they spent the remainder of their existence together. leave a comment
